Research Methods

There are five main kinds of research methods; they are experiment, survey, observations, case histories, and an analysis of historical documents. The main research method I used in my study was to be a secret participant observer. This is a type of field study in which the researcher becomes a member of the group being studied. I believe that through being a participant observer you get the unedited version of what is really going on.

As you study nothing is left out because the population doesn't know that they are being studied. I think this will make the final analysis much more accurate than just doing observations where the people know they are being studied and they will be nervous. Observations are a way to document your finding of a study in a very objective way. Another research method I used was interview; a guided conversation between the investigator and the research subject or subjects.

Being a secret participant turned every conversations between my population and myself into and interview. This is extremely helpful when doing a study with my population. When going over my documentation of


A generalization of these cliques would be; there are the hippies, the freaks, the gothic, the students, the gays, the homophobic, the teachers, the families, the children, the artist, and those people who will spend the rest of their lives here with absolutely no desire to leave. There are many more social groups; I see these to be the most prominent. The town is so old that it is considered historic. I believe it would not survive with out the college that takes up half of the town with its four thousand student.
