Set Music Free
I'd like to discuss a problem involving music sharing and Napster in America today. With the recent court hearing against Napster many teenagers and people are enraged with the judgment against Napster. I feel that music sharing should be legal regardless of the copyright laws in effect. When Shawn Fanning created Napster, he wanted to build a community that could share and swap music files known as MP3's. In the beginning, the big record companies had no problem with this program and thought that it would stimulate their business. After it's huge growth and popularity, they started to complain about Napster saying it was taking a portion of their business and was threatening record companies business. I think that this is absurd because most people using Napster would download a song by a certain artist and then go out and buy the CD. If anything, Napster brought more business to them. There was also a section of their website dedicated to advertising new and upcomin!g bands in order to spread their popularity to the public. They were not paid for this at all. Thanks to certain record companies including: Interscope, Warner Brothers, and Electra, a lawsuit was filed against Napster. After all the

I have done much research and studying into this subject and I think that my second solution would be the most beneficial and practical remedy to this growing problem in America today. Through this solution, everyone would reap the benefits and prosper from it. Plus it eliminates the record company's greatest fear: piracy and "CD burning". The conversion from a MP3 file to a WAV file is a simple task for the Napster programmers to perform and users could still listen to this music on their PC. Another important element to this solution is that only the companies that desire to utilize Napster will participate. I think that this solution would expand society's interest in music by using advertising on the website. When a company advertises using Napster, millions of people will be exposed to it every day. I strongly support my proposition and I'm sure you can clearly see that the problem with the "free music movement" will not go away any time soon. My final solution is one that the executives at Napster are trying to submit to congress. This solution involves Napster becoming a radio station that would broadcast over the Internet. This idea is interesting because users could basically log on to the website and listen to Napster like a radio station instead of downloading the songs. Radio stations don't have to follow the guidelines and restrictions of the copyright system so Napster wouldn't have to either. Once again this solution would benefit both the music industry and Napster by the promotion of artists and labels through the Internet. If this plan were actually executed, Napster radio would be the most listened to radio station in the world. The advertisement possibilities are overwhelming. If Napster can convince Congress to let them proceed with this plan, Napster would still have free music
