Television, unlike many other modern inventions, did not have a single inventor. There were many people that participated in its creation. Television was, however, created in the United States. One of the men that participated in the invention was Dr. Vladimir Zworykin (Winship 1).

Dr. Zworykin invented the iconoscope in 1923. The iconoscope is the "electric eye" that makes television work (Floherty 14). Therefore, Dr. Zworykin is credited as one of the main inventors of television. Dr. Zworykin did most of his research while working for the RCA Corporation. Another of the main inventors of television is Philo T. Farnsworth. He created the first television transmitter and the first receiver. On September 7, 1927, Philo T. Farnsworth transmitted and received the first television signal. In 1930, Farnsworth was awarded a patent for electronic television . Farnsworth later went on to other things, but Television was always his first priority. At first, Farnsworth was quite unimpressed with the programming on television, but he realized t

A television works by shooting a stream of electrons at the "inside" of the television screen. The screen is covered by phosphor, which glows when these electrons hit it. The electron beam scans rapidly across the screen, creating many bright spots each second. These bright spots make up the picture that is seen by the viewer (Irvine 18).

Television signals are all around us everyday. They are transmitted as radio waves and received by the antenna on the television set. The television set then decodes the information and displays the proper pictures with the corresponding audio. The signals can also be transmitted along a special cable called a coaxial cable or via satellite. The cable transmissions are very popular in metropolitan areas because of the greater signal quality and availability of channels.
