The Punic Wars were made up of three significant wars. Though the last was more of a Roman punishment on Carthage, there was still a declaration of war. The two powers involved in these wars were Rome and Carthage. Rome had control of the main peninsula of Italy, while Carthage controlled the as well as islands and commerce of the West Mediterranean. At one point, the two were on friendly terms. However, a dispute on the Island of Sicily initiated the start of the First Punic War (Encyclopedia.com). The Punic Wars have major historical content involving leaders on both sides as well as the battles fought amongst the two city-states. A quarrel between two Sicilian cities initiated The First Punic War. The two cities involved were Messana (now Messina) and Syracuse. "Both Rome and Carthage had a desire to hold Messana; for Carthage, it would be an ideal port in their continuing dominance of the Mediterranean. For Rome, it would be an outpost in a strengthening land defense policy" (w.dl.ket.org). Tactics used by Hannibal helped him defeat Rome in battles where the odds were much more favorable for Rome. Hannibal first encounters the Romans at Trebia. Hannibal, like his father, would use guerilla warfare. In this battle, Hannibal hid troops while using other troops in luring the Romans to fight. Weather conditions also played a key role in this victory for Hannibal. After the Romans began to fight, the hidden Carthaginian troops came out of hiding to surround the Roman army. Out of the 40,000 Roman troops, only 10,000 had survived (de Beer 186-188).
