Buddhism is not a term one can use to speak about the people of one religion. There are several different forms of Buddhism, and these forms are very different from one another. The two forms of Buddhism being discussed are Theravada and Shin Buddhism. When one thinks of two forms of Buddhism, one may think that there are subtle differences, like in the different kinds of Christianity. The fact of the matter is that Shin Buddhism has more in common with Christianity than it does with Theravada. A big part of Shin Buddhism is faith, while the main point in Theravada is personal enlightenment. The ways that the two attain Nirvana are almost totally different. The fourth Noble Truth is that there are notions that one holds about the things of this world, such as continuity, closure, flow, and singularity, which cause us to suffer. The Eight Fold path, or Middle Way, are the ways one must live to reach enlightenment and Nirvana. These eight things deal with wisdom, morality, and meditation. One must have Right Understanding(of the Noble truths), Right Aspirations to ease suffering, Right Effort to avoid laziness. One also needs Right Speech and Right Conduct(humbleness , compassion, etc.). One needs a Right Livelihood, or one that does not hurt others. One needs Right Mindfulness, which is keeping ones thoughts in the present and not being consumed by thoughts, and Right Concentration, to cause stillness in one's life. Theravada Buddhists believe that if one reaches all these steps, one may enter into Nirvana. Meditation is a key factor in reaching these goals.
