Othello
Men are viewed as the stronger sex since the beginning of time, they are the ones who build shelters, go hunting to get food to eat and do all the "hard" labor work. It is never the woman who does work. Even the media portrays that women are more "fragile" than men. This view of women is evident in William Shakespeare's play Othello. In William Shakespeare's time women are viewed as the ones who should stay home, cook, clean and take care of the children. The majority of William Shakespeare's play illustrates that women are the "weaker" sex. It is clear that the men in the play Othello view the women, Emilia, Bianca, and Desdemona, as weak characters through their actions and dialogue. As the play progresses, we see all their character traits and learn that they may seem weak in the beginning but they each are strong in their own individual way.Love is a term that is thrown around very easily, which is true in the relationship between Emilia and her husband Iago. Emilia shows a lot of love towards Iago, but Iago does not love her back. A heart-breaking situation is when one person loves another so much, but the other person does not share the same feelings. Emilia's love for Iago proves to be her weak point. When Emilia finds D
O thou dull Moor! That handkerchief thou speak'st of Saints m your injuries, devils being offended, I found by fortune and did give my husband; This could be considered an act of heroism. By the actions that Emilia takes, it shows that even though she loves her husband, she knows that she has to do the right thing even if it means exposing the truth. When Emilia says this, she shows that she is no longer going to do what her husband tells her and that she is strong enough to make her own decisions. Another example of a weak female character in Othello is Bianca. Bianca is the "town whore" and she is deeply in love with Cassio. The feeling seems to be mutual between the two, but because of Cassio's reputation, he does not want to destroy it as being known as the man who married a courtesan, "I marry her!! What? A customer! Prithee, bear some charity to/my wit; do not think it so unwholesome. Ha, ha, ha!" (Shakespeare 4.1.136-137) When Cassio says this it shows that he is more worried about his reputation than his feelings for Bianca. If Cassio really felt true love for Bianca it would not matter what her reputation was or use to be. Therefore Bianca's weakness, is the fact that she knows how Cassio feels about her, and she still pursues his love. Desdemona gets very upset when Iago tells her his view of women and the strong part of her character is revealed because she gives Iago a piece of her mind. Desdemona exclaims that those are only a male's sexist view of how women should be. Although, for the majority of the play Desdemona does prove to be a weak character, however at times she does show signs of strength in her character. More t
