In literature, authors often write about the world around them. In other words, they write what they live. Take, for example, William Shakespeare. He lived through the Elizabethan Era of the Renaissance. He was a rich man and wrote mainly to please the queen, so all of his works involve a person of royalty as the main character. Another good example is George Orwell. In his classic masterpiece, "1984", he takes in all the totalitarianism during the World War II days, the era in which he lived, and exploits it by predicting what the world will be like in a few decades if the world is run by a totalitarian government. Writer's sometimes may not write about the things happening around them at the exact time they write the book, but rather relate their writings to events that happened to them in the past. Stephen King is that type of author. He takes his imaginative thoughts and adds in little tidbits that somewhat reveal his past. Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947 at Portland General Hospital in Maine. He also writes under the alias Richard Bachman (Stephen King 1). He fears death, closed spaces, deformities, insects, rats, snakes and the dark (Stephen King 1). King currently has a wife, Tabitha Spruce, whom he met
ople together for 3 days of "peace, love and happiness"(News Events 4). Atomic bombs were becoming increasingly popular in foreign countries (News Events 1). And televisions were in just about every household in America (News Events 1). Stephen is a "baby boomer", a name created for and by people who were born in the period between 1943-1953 (News Events 1). By the time disco was introduced, King had already been writing novels and having children, so disco fever never caught on with the baby boomers. War and Peace, these two words summarize the late 50's, 60's and 70's up perfectly (News Events 4). In conclusion, writers throughout history have used what they have experienced all through their lives and put it into their novels, poems, stories, novellas and epics. It is an essential part of writing and writing will always change with the times. I wonder what people will be writing about in year 2150. I know one thing for sure, they wont mention anything about N'Sync. Richardson, Ian "Stephen King"(n.d.)1pp. Online. Internet. 1 February 2001 "Biography- Stephen King" (n.d.) 1pp. Online. It is a collection of four short stories, or novellas, that reveal that Stephen King is not just a horror writer (King, Stephen). The first story in the book is called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption (King, Stephen). The story is narrated by Red, a longtime colored prisoner of Shawshank. Shawshank is a United States federal prison. Red is the guy in jail that can smuggle just about anything in. His story is about a fellow prisoner named Andy Dufresne. Andy was falsely accused of killing his wife and her lover while they were making love. Andy is a educated white man and somehow comes up with a supreme plan to break out of jail. He befriends Red and begins his plan. He had Red smuggle in a rock sculptor and a large poster of Rita Hayworth. And he also somehow ends up doing all the guards and the Warden's tax returns. While doing this he sets up an account for himself under a fake name a! Available WWW: http://www.infoplease.com/ Available WWW: http://www.empirezine.com/spotlight/king/sk-
