Jack and Jill drove up the hill to fetch a case of beer. Jack had a wreck and broke his neck and Jill died shortly after. On the weekends a lot of people make the decision to go to a party or bar, have a few drinks, and relax with friends. Over the years, people have repeatedly made the dangerous decision to drive after drinking. The consequences can be as severe as resulting in the death of yourself or a victim. Another consequence that may follow, could take part in a legal action such as being issued a DUI (driving under the influence) or a DWI (driving while intoxicated). Because of the prevalence of these incidents, national organizations, including M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Drunk Driving) have developed.

Whether it has been a next door neighbor, a best friend, or someone as prestigious as Princess Diana; we all know someone who has been involved in an accident involving alcohol. Research indicates that, "In 1997, 16,189 Americans were killed by alcohol-related crashes, accounting for nearly half of all traffic fatalities" (Internet). In 1988, the nation witnessed its deadliest drunk driving crash. There were twenty-four children and three adults dead at the sight of the crash. The driver of the crash, "Mahoney, now forty six, was heavily intoxicated when he drove his truck the wrong way down Interstate 71. Into the 1977-vintage, converted school bus on the night of May 14, 1988. The impact ruptured the bus' fuel tank, turning the vehicle into an inferno" (Hoversten, 3A). Mahoney only served nine years and seven months of a sixteen-year sentence with a conviction of manslaughter. He was issued a DWI (Driving while Intoxicated). There were lives taken and futures wasted because of his need for alcohol. We, as a society let these people walk away from these incidents with a slap on the wrist.
