home
What is the meaning of the word "HOME"? In my English-Thai dictionary, it said " a place where one lives, was born or reared", it also means " a place thought of as home." By the way, in Thai we call home " Baan." This word transformed from a word "Bang," as you can see in the word "Bangkok." So I guess home to a lot of people does not necessary refer to a enclose space with roof but there are much more emotional attachment to it.What's "Home" means to me? Its means a place where I feel comfortable in, and the place where I can paint my personality on. I guess the word control also takes big part in my home. I grew up in a very neat and tidy family where everything has its own space and when things get move around in one day, it would come back to the same exact place the next day. Therefore this habit got embedded in my head before I even realize it. So the control over my space is very important, I like to control the quality of light, the position of the furniture, how the air flow through the space, the temperature, and the last but not least, the level of sound. All these elements combine create an environment I call home or "feel at home" I have been living outside of Thailand for seven years. I have live in New Zealand,
. For example when a person go back to the place he use to live in, though everything is still in the same exact place, he does not feel at home anymore because the smell of the new owner is in the house. and now I live in the US. In New Zealand, I went to a boarding school, in junior years I live in a dorm where space are shared with four different people and space was enclosed by certain. Privacy was absolutely limited. My home then was a little space on my desk where I have picture frames of my family, friends, and my girl-friend. Right now I do not long for little home in high school at all, but I long for my boarding house friends, so my home take a different form now. Parts of my home are not only embedded to the space but also people, and when these people gather again at some point in a certain environment, I feel at home.
