The First Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that " Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Granted, the acts of such orders as the Ku Klux Klan, Black Panthers, and the Skinheads surpass the protection of the First Amendment. However, the mere beliefs of each of these organizations can not be diminished from society. Under the Constitution of the United States, the American people are free to have faith and believe in anything they choose too. To prevent any of these groups from their beliefs is equally as unjust as preventing the late Mother Teresa
"When racist speech takes the form of face-to-face insults, catcalls, or other assaultive speech aimed at an individual or small group of persons, then it falls within the "fighting words' exception to first amendment protection"(Cooper and Macdonald ). Schools through out the United States have gone through endless debates over the limits of speech or if they should even exist. Many schools have adapted rules and laws of limiting speech. Like Charles L. Lawrence III, I believe that limiting speech is not the way to handle ignorance. This action is not the act of speaking, but an act we perform by speaking a speech act. Limiting the speech of University students across America merely avoids the face-to-face insults that are unprotected by the First Amendments.
