napoleon
France, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, did not have a government anywhere near as complex as the current one in the United States. This allowed their leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, total control without fear of consequences for his actions. The United States of America is a democracy and the people directly choose many of the high level public officials. For the past eight years a democratic president, William Jefferson Blythe Clinton, has led our country. Although the president was never convicted of any wrong doing during his tenure in office, he was impeached and many of the citizens who voted for him began to disbelieve him. The majority of American citizens still feel the president was guilty of obstruction of justice and perjury and if those citizens were on the senate, 80 percent of them would have voted to convict the president on these charges (Agreement Poll). Obstruction of justice and perjury were the official charges against him, however, all !of the problems the president faced stemmed from improper relations with an intern, Monica Lewinsky, and the lying which was used to attempt at covering up the incident. Napoleon caused similar controversies while ruling France, and a great deal of Europe,
Bonaparte is portrayed as a masterful tactician and military leader in a vast amount of textbooks and the minds of many historians throughout the world. He led his powerful French army to stomp out competition from an abundance of neighboring countries and claim their land under his empire. As he worked his way across the continent of Europe he placed Lords in charge of the conquered land in order to allow Napoleon to concentrate the greater part of his time and effort on the army under his command. The people who were ruled over did not elect these Lords and, often they were personal friends of Bonaparte. If there were an instance of injustice, immorality, or negligence by Napoleon at any point during his dominant venture for a greater empire, it would not have even been considered for reprocutions by any person or court. There was no system to insure the proper actions of this leader of millions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Herold, J. Christopher. The Mind of Napoleon. New York: Columbia University, 1955. I am not saying that Clinton does not deserve to be president, because he has undoubtedly survived the due process of our system of government. We cannot deny the credit for the many achievements of Napoleon either, however, the way in which he attained that success and the manner in which he carried himself while ruling an empire would in no way be acceptable means of leadership for a country such as ours in the present day. The leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, described above would last as the President of the United States as long as a fish would remain alive in the Arizona desert. The impeachment of President Clinton could be seen as a disgrace to our country, however when looked at in proportion to what could happen if we lacked appropriate safeguards on our leaders, it is actually a relief to have this situation prove that our method of government works. The extravagant lifestyle led by Napoleon while at home in Paris and in the field overseeing the battles of his military are just one sign of his self-centered attitude. He often conquered countries for the sole purpose of attaining money and land to broaden his empire. He gave no consideration to the size, political stance, or actions of the countries that his armies trampled. Those who stood in the way of his self-righteous ram
