Gatto's Educational View
Three men, Gatto, Rose, French Commission three different ideas but yet we still can find something in common. All of the ideas relate to education and how the system works. One says the other is right and the other says the other two are wrong. Who is right and who is wrong? After reading these three essays I believe that all of the men are right about something different. Some of their ideas such as: class position, standards of students and teachers are found in today's educational system. Gatto is the man that recognizes what is taught to the students and how he enforces his teachings. The first thing that appears in today's educational system would be class position. This is the first thing because the schools start it off as soon as the students walk through the door. Class position plays a major role in each essay. At the beginning of Rose's essay it is easy to spot class position. "The other Rose apparently didn't do very well, for I was in the vocational track, a euphemism for the "bottom" level (Rose, 175)." This shows class position by the word bottom. If you have a bottom you must have a top, which in means that Rose was on the bottom of the educational system and not at the top. This is
Rose had the right idea on that if you don't push students then they will only raise to a certain level. "Students will float to the mark you set (Rose, 177)." Rose is right that students slack off and only does enough to get by. What this quote means is that if someone sets a standard for students they either raise or fall to the mark eventually. If you don't push the students to learn then they will only learn as much as you want them to learn. "But how would someone like Tommy Rose, with his two years of Italian schooling, know what to ask? And what sort of pressure could an exhausted waitress apply? The error went undetected, and I remained in the vocational track for two years (Rose, 175)." He also teaches emotional control by giving the students rewards. "...I teach kids to surrender their will to the predestinated chain of command (Gatto, 169)." This means that kids will only work as hard as you let them think they are able to. Students can only perform up to what other people say. For instance if you tell a child that he is stupid he will eventually believe that they are stupid because that is what they are being told. This found in today's system because students are told they are slower then other students. This causes the students to believe they are actually slower when in reality they are not. This relates back to the Rose quote saying that the students will only work as hard as you let them think they can work. By Rose saying "Students will float to the mark you set (177)." He is saying that the students will only work at the pace you set for the students. Sometimes the pace is to slow like what happened with Rose and then the students just give up and d! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This quote is an example of the American School System and its classes. The classes are made by the concept of socio-Economic Status. Socio economic status dictates that one would be higher on the social ladder based on how much money one has. The socio economic status however is based upon ones back ground, their ethnicity. Class position in Gatto is lesson number two. Gatto explains many things in his c
