Rose had the right idea on that if you don't push students then they will only raise to a certain level. "Students will float to the mark you set (Rose, 177)." Rose is right that students slack off and only does enough to get by. What this quote means is that if someone sets a standard for students they either raise or fall to the mark eventually. If you don't push the students to learn then they will only learn as much as you want them to learn.

He also teaches emotional control by giving the students rewards. "...I teach kids to surrender their will to the predestinated chain of command (Gatto, 169)." This means that kids will only work as hard as you let them think they are able to. Students can only perform up to what other people say. For instance if you tell a child that he is stupid he will eventually believe that they are stupid because that is what they are being told. This found in today's system because students are told they are slower then other students. This causes the students to believe they are actually slower when in reality they are not. This relates back to the Rose quote saying that the students will only work as hard as you let them think they can work. By Rose saying "Students will float to the mark you set (177)."
