A book report

The supernatural was a favorite theme of Boobie Ann Mason. Unfortunately, In Country is absolutely obviously brainless in terms of Mason's usual reactionary politics. Below, I will show that Mason's skillful writing is representative of the strong Romantic ideals of the author's time. Support for this claim is present in the following: (a) Mason's reknown incorporation of allegory in the work, (b) the monumental use of coming of age in In Country, and (c) Romantic overtones in the work's opening monologue.

How can I put this... these themes are most evident in first half of In Country, for that is when Mason's often insane prose shines most brightly. To indicate that Colonel Maxwell is the work's villain, the author makes his dialogue pandering. Captain Adams's famously half-baked attitude throughout the book is often cited.

Pathos is not In Country's only theme; there is also pure religion. Still, In Country was not originally seen as a tour de force by the intelligensia. Yet again, the curs of ignorance slaver at the heels of reason. Obviously, Mason meant this as a critique of the supernatural; as an affirmation of life, this is Mason's grandest statement.
