During the time period of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice the institution of marriage was considered to be crucial to a woman's survival. There were very few financial options available to women that existed during the 1800s and marriage was a definite way a woman could secure her monetary future. Most single women, unless born into money, were destined to be poverty stricken. Although women do not face the problems to the same level as the women in the seventeenth century, marriage is still viewed as proper and is the most common and socially acceptable lifetime goal there is. Economically and socially it is far more supported than any other alternative lifestyle in existence. During the 1800s the goal of a woman's life was to find a suitable husband and become wed to him. The parents spent their lives searching for a match that would support not only their daughter, but one that would often times give them support as well.
