A detailed Summary of Pride and Prejudice


During the time period of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice the institution of marriage was considered to be crucial to a woman's survival. There were very few financial options available to women that existed during the 1800s and marriage was a definite way a woman could secure her monetary future. Most single women, unless born into money, were destined to be poverty stricken. Although women do not face the problems to the same level as the women in the seventeenth century, marriage is still viewed as proper and is the most common and socially acceptable lifetime goal there is. Economically and socially it is far more supported than any other alternative lifestyle in existence.

During the 1800s the goal of a woman's life was to find a suitable husband and become wed to him. The parents spent their lives searching for a match that would support not only their daughter, but one that would often times give them support as well. In Pride and Prejudice, Ms. Bennet makes it obvious that her main concern with her daughters is finding them husbands. Their happiness seems to take sec


The marriages of the seventeenth century were much less about love about much more about satisfying ones economic future. The marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte supports this idea. Charlotte marries Mr. Collins, but not because she loves him. She is not "romantic, as you know" (87), she "only ask(s) a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collins' character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with is him is as fair, as most people can boast on entering the marriage state."(87). According to Charlotte she decided to marry him because his connections, money, and lifestyle would support her and give her the peace of mind she needed to be happy.
