The 1950's had some of the most influential events in it that shaped the movie industry. As the country was moving from a war worried place to the new utopia of the "Golden Age" there were many aspects of society that played a part in movie making. America was an untouchable nation with a very free attitude, but when women wanted to take part in movies we, as a nation, rejected the idea of women in leading roles. When the Second World War came to an end, there were many soldiers that came home to the US and found that the American dream was more obtainable then ever before. The dream of owning a home and having a wife and kids was much more real. The movie industry saw a great opportunity to capitalize on this. They made movies such as Sunset Boulevard, which was a great "date" movie that couples could go to. The movie theaters practically doubled ticket sales. Another strong opponent to the movie industry was the newly invented television. After the Second World War, the country had to lay off a large number of workers to survive the recession of the TV watchers. TV made the viewer get more involved with their fantasy world and they could build on it weekly, not just for two hours. Another issue was the amount of money that the women got paid compared to the amount their counterpart male actors got paid. There were many non-violent acts, such as sit-ins and protests that got their point across. After a little apprehension, the industry eventually gave in and gave the women the same rights as the men. When women got the opportunity to star as the lead in a movie, it opened many doors for them, including not having to rely on their husbands, developing a strong sense of self-worth, and finally showing the world that they are every bit as good as the men.
