The two forces that govern humankind can be found everywhere in the novel, specifically the routine and reason I think can be seen in the daily gist of things. Like Ivan for example just the basic and simple way he lived his boring life everyday the same way. He and everyone else in mother Russia did the same darn things. They all had their moneymaking routines. They got up, went to a boring job they only took to put some green in their pockets, and then went home to a woman who only wanted more. That was Ivan's life in a nutshell. And that was his routine. Also he had the routine of just being the background. He never really made it a point to stand out or be anything or anybody of importance or specialty. He was a regular Joe who just blended in with the scenery.
I think that makes the plot of the story something that everyone can relate to. You don't have to rich to get the story, although if you are you can still understand what is being said. If you are a unique person as opposed to the person sitting in the corner apart form everyone else you too can still relate to the story. It is routine which makes one's skill stagnant. When you get comfortable you cease to strive for excellence. You become satisfied and stop yearning and desiring for more. That's what happened to Ivan that was one of his deaths in a sense of the word. Somewhat living and partly living you could call it.
