Sun Also Rises "Loss"
I was amazed at this group of characters and their issues of loss in "The Sun Also Rises." The whole little group; Jake, Brett, Cohn, Mike and Bill, are all a just of lost souls. They are always traveling around and going somewhere, but never really arriving anywhere. It seemed that one common theme in this book was that they were drunken ramblers. They wander from party to party, from lover to lover and just live one day at a time. I agree with your discussion on loss, but I am going to try to build on the topic. I think the best way is to discuss the issue of lost with each main character. Jake is the main character and his loss easily recognizable, his impotency. Throughout the whole book Jake shows his feelings for Brett, but he knows they cannot be together because of his injury. I believe that this is the root cause of Jake's drinking, he is trying to forget. At one point in chapter 18, Jake is feeling low. His and Bills solution to the problem is to drink his depression away. That obviously didn't work. It
seemed to me that Jake genuinely loved Brett. He got depressed when he was around her because he could not be with her. The very end of the book sums up Jake and Brett's relationship. Brett said, "We could have had such a damned good time together." Jake replied, "Yes, isn't it pretty to think so." Jake shares Brett's thought but knows they could never realistically survive without a sexual relationship, which he cannot provide. Lady Brett Ashley seemed to be the most lost of all the characters. She jumps around from guy to guy and place to place. She is seeking a divorce from her current husband so she can marry Mike. Brett uses men as sexual playthings and she drifts from one man to the next. While she is engaged to Mike she falls for Pedro Romano, the bullfighter, and eventually that falls apart because of his patriotic pride. She eventually always returns to Mike. Hemingway, Ernest. "The Sun Also Rises" The final member of the group, at least the group in Spain, was Bill Gordon. Bill seemed to be the most
