Beloved
In Toni Morrison's Beloved, Sethe describes two places, a plantation she worked at as a slave, known as Sweet Home, and her home, 124 Bluestone Road, which is haunted by Sethe's dead daughter, Beloved. In her first descriptions of 124, Sethe uses language to that shows the miserable conditions of living in a haunted house, and there are no images that display the good in 124. In her descriptions of Sweet Home, Sethe uses language to show the evil in the plantation, but also uses language that tells readers Sethe appreciated the beauty of the place, and some of the feelings it left her with. Considering the symbolic meaning of both places, it is very ironic that Sethe recognizes the evil rather than the good of 124 Bluestone Road, and both good and evil in Sweet Home. The first description of Sethe's home,124 Bluestone Road, show the reader that it is neither a secure or safe place to live. The irony of Sethe's feelings towards 124 Bluestone Road and Sweet Home lie within the symbols they represent for her, compared to the symbols they would represent to the typical ex-slave. 124 would make a typical ex-slave feel proud because it is a house they own, which denotes emancipation and freedom. For a typical ex-slave, Sweet Home would rank among the most painful of memories, with no presence of good. For Sethe, 124 represents pain and misery because it embodies the memories of her dead daughter, and while memories of Sweet Home are painful for Sethe, they summon beautiful thoughts and good feelings for her re created by the first images of it, and they make the house seem non-tenantable. The irony in this description comes about when we realize that for a typical ex-slave family, there would be an important symbolic meaning of the 124 Bluestone Road. fter a mild flirtation with Paul D, Sethe calls back a memory of Sweet Home, "This is the way they were-had been. All of the Sweet Home men, before and after Halle, treated her to a mild brotherly flirtation..."
