The Land of India
My freshman year of high school I went to my friend, Shifali's house for a party. At the party, I saw a statue and alter of a Buddha. Some kids thought it was a toy and started playing with it. When Shifali's mom saw the kids playing with it, she got very upset. None of us understood why, until she explained that they were from the India and they worshiped the Buddha religion. I still don't quite understand what that means, so I decided to do some research on the culture of India, religion in India, and the education system in India. The land of India is over fifty thousand years old and is a little more than one-third the size of the United States (Heitzman and Worden XXXV). Guatama Buddha was an Indian philosopher and the founder of Buddhism (Life of Buddha 2000). India has always been a center for learning. Indian universities and institutes of higher education today have made great contributions to the program of knowledge and frontiers of science and technology. Above !is a preview of the culture of India, religion in India and the education system in India, which will be discussed in this paper. The Indian civilization is over fifty thousand years old (Heitzman and Worden XXXV). Not only is it the second most populated
. In 528BC Gautama Buddha experienced "the Great Enlightenment" (revealed the way of salvation from suffering.) After "the Great Enlightenment" Buddha preached his first sermon (Life of Buddha 2000). A lot of scholars compare this sermon's tone of moral elevation and historical importance, to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Life of Buddha 2000). In 1997 there were two hundred and nineteen universities in India. The language of instruction at the best-rated colleges is in English. Some universities are considered as high standard universities (Heitzman and Worden 108). In 1995 there were over five million students in the Indian universities (Indian Education 2000). Less than three percent of India's population has an academic education. However, India has almost twenty four million university graduates and is among the few countries in the world to launch satellites and has proven it's nuclear capability and because of this, many companies from around the world have arrived in India (Indian Education 2000). Indian universities and institutes of higher education today have made great contributions to the program of knowledge and frontiers of science and technology. (Education in India 2000). Traditional subjects such as arts and humanities, pure sciences, applied physics and chemistry, have played a leading role to transform India into a modern, technologically advanced state (Education in India 2000). Buddha traveled, teaching his doctrines, gathering followers, and establishing monastic communities that admitted anyone regardless of their social class (Index of Culture/Religion 2000). Briefly, Buddha returned to his "native town" and converted his father, wife and other members of his family to his own beliefs. Buddha died at the age of eighty (Life of Buddha 2000). In the 1980's researchers came to the conclusion that one-third of Indians study in schools that have English taught as a medium of instruction (Heitzman
