ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY LOGS: OBSERVATIONS OF ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR

Situation: February 18, 2001, approximately 3 p.m. On this date while at my job in a pizza store I observed a little boy about 5 years old and his mother coming to eat their lunch. When I served the boy his pizza it was hot. When he took his first bite he burned his tongue, so he attempted to take another bite, only to burn his tongue again. After the second attempt, the boy put down the pizza and turned his attention to his toys. When the moter noticed this, she began yelling at the boy to eat his food, and the boy refused. The mother than had me cut up the pizza and attempted to feed the boy the pizza. The boy started to cry saying that he didn't want to eat it cause it was hot and would burn him. The mother than put the pizza in the bag and they left the store.

Psychological Analysis: In this case it appears that the little boy has become conditioned to associating the pizza with burning in his mouth. The pizza is a conditioned stimulus and the boy crying is a conditioned response. According to Davison and Neal (2001) this is known as Classical Conditioning. This case is similar to Pavlov's study on dogs (pg41) in which the dog began responding to the bell (cs) by salivating (cr). The dog associates food with the sound of the

Situation: March 13, 2001, approximately 10:10p.m. On this date, I was at my girlfriend's house watching television when a movie with a snake appeared on the screen. She began pleading with me to change the channel, and even though I knew she was scared of snakes, I had no idea she was this scared so I left the channel on. I was trying to explain to her that it was in the t.v. and there was no harm it could do to her, but she began crying uncontrollably and ran out of the room.

Psychological Analysis: In this case it appears the man is suffering from a form of depression. According to Davison and Neale (p.241) "depression is an emotional state marked by great sadness, feelings of worthlessness and guilt, withdrawal from others and loss of sleep, appetite, sexual desire, and interest and pleasure in usual activities." This particular man seems to be suffering from dysthymia, which is a depressed mood that is chronic and relatively continual in nature. Basically he's been depressed all the time for a long period of time. This was obviously triggered when his girlfriend cheated on and left him. The man displays many symptoms of depression such as weight gain, loss of interest in work, sleep problems and feeling worthless and as a failure as a man. Most depression cases only last a few months, but it is still crucial to treat them because in that few months a person's life can be ruined, or that person may even commit suicide. Depression is a Mood Disor!

Situation: February 23, 2001, approximately 8:15 a.m. On this date while at my other job in a doctors office I was working with a fellow employee, a 23 year old woman. The woman, upon arriving at the desk, noticed that many of the objects on the desk were not in the order they are usually left in. The desk was not messy but not as organized as it usually is. The woman then proceeded to try to rearrange the entire desk exactly the way she had left it, she did this four times until she was satisfied. The woman had also begun swearing out loud (there were no patients present at the time), and accus
