Technical Instructions paper

A modem is the hardware device that connects your computer to the Internet. A standard dial-up (56k or slower) connection translates analog information (noise) into digital information (what you see on your computer's screen). If you have a faster connection, such as ISDN, cable modem access, or DSL, your modem takes the information in whatever form it receives it and renders it into a form that your computer--and you--can understand.

Regardless of what you already have (or decide to choose), these Technical Instructions will allow you to make a successful installation.

If your modem is slower than 56k, it's time to get a new one. If you've opted for a DSL, cable access, or ISDN connection, having it installed professionally is the way to go. This document focuses on installing standard internal and external modems for Windows 95/98-compatible PCs. These instructions are intended to give you a basic idea of how it's done.

You will need to take precautions to avoid damaging your new modem with static electricity. While this type of damage is more likely to occur when installing a hard drive or additional memo

ry, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

At this point, you need to determine whether you have a desktop computer or a tower model. If your computer was lying flat on your desk with the monitor on top of it, it's probably a desktop model. If your computer was standing up vertically next to your monitor, it's probably a tower model. The only difference it makes in this procedure is that with desktop models, you'll need to remove the top to replace the modem, and with tower models you'll be removing the side for access.
