Without society's rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light. In William Golding's book Lord Of The Flies, it is shown that humans can be civilized for only so long when we are detached form civilization. In the beginning of this book they run the island a lot like a Democracy. The Conch shell symbolizes civilization and order. When they kill the pig they act like savages and show no mercy. Jack paints his face and it makes him a different person. Society holds everyone together, and without these conditions, our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost.
The boys are very organized at the beginning of the book with shelter and almost a setup government. Then they start to act more like a beast. There is still some shining of human when jack doesn't kill the pig and says, "Next time," (Golding 28) he also said that he couldn't get a good shot at the pig. He makes up excuses why he doesn't kill the pig but
Lord Of The Flies responds to Simon with, "I'm part of you...We're going to have fun on this island." (Golding 115) This statement by the Lord Of The Flies confirms that there is a beast but it shows that the beast is actually inside everyone one of the boys.
The most savage act in this book is when Simon is murdered. The way that he is killed shows that there is no hope for the boys to be human anymore. They formed their circle, dancing and chanting. Simon runs up trying to tell them the truth about the beast but is beaten to death. Then while Jack's tribe separates from Ralph Piggy's glasses are stolen. This shows the disappearance of any order. The boys are often being reminded of the fire, which shows that they are losing touch with the outside world. Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric go to the rock fort to get back Piggy's glasses but Jack laughs at their request. A fight breaks out and piggy is struck by a boulder and thrown off a
