"The Cat in the Rain" witten by Ernest Hemingway is a short story that takes place in an hotel in Italy where an American couple is spending its vacation. Hemingway in this story tries to show the readers the kind of relationship that the two partners have; it does that in a direct way, through the language of the husband, and in a symbolic way, through the story of the cat.
The cat, which is trying to protect himself from the rain hiding under a table, becomes the American woman's dream for protection and affection. When she sees the cat, she wants to go rescue him because she thinks that in that moment he needs someone to take care of him. The owner of the hotel is an old man with very kind manners, according to the American woman; she likes him and it looks like he knows what she needs, what can make her happy and how she wants to be treated better then her husband. For instance, he takes care of her providing her with an umbrella when she is going out to get the cat, after warning her about the bad weather.
