tale of cities

Antonio: He is the main character of the novel. . He witnesses many deaths at a young age, and as a result questions God. He sees the deaths of Lupito, Narciso, Florence, and Ultima.. He is guided and is taught by Ultima.

Ultima: Is an old women who came to live with Tony and his family. She is very pagan and uses herbs and magic to cure people. As Tony grows up under her guidance, she teaches him about herbs. She also has an owl which she believes is her spirit.

Maria Luna: She is the mother of Tony. She is very religious and a strong Catholic Her family was lead to the town of El Puerto by a farmer-priest.

Gabriel Marez: He is the father of Tony. They wander the earth and llano. His father talks about how the wind is the guiding soul for the Marez Family.

Leon, Andrew, and Eugene: These are Tony's older brothers. They spend their time as womenizers. Leon and Eugene and Andrew leave for Santa Fe.

Cico, Samuel, and Florence: These are some of Tony's. Cico is a fisher and he knows all the legends and the waterways of the town. Florence is an athiest, because of the life he lives now( mainly because of the deaths of his parents. Samuel is quiet


Ultima's Owl: The owl symbolizes the spirit of Ultima. The owl is in peace with all its surrounding just like to whom it symbolizes Ultima.

In the beginning of the story Ultima arrives when Tony is only six. Ultima is known for her wisdom an d powers. Tony's three older brothers are off at war, and he lives with his two sisters, parents, and Ultima. One night a man comes to the house and talks to Tony's father saying that a man named Lupito has war sickness and has gone mad and killed the sheriff. Gabriel and the other men from town track Lupito down. Antonio follows his father as the search for Lupito and he sees them shoot Lupito dead. Tony runs back home terrified. Ultima catches him as he enters back home and comforts him

The author uses legends and magic in his writing. The time period he writes in believed witchcraft. He also uses crude Spanish dialogue. The author writes with a good and clear description.

Religion: Mexicans are of Spanish descent, to which the Catholic religion dwells. As Tony grows up, he too is brought into the Spanish traditional religion of Catholicism . Tony witnesses' death and bad things happen to good people, and he wonders why this happens and wonders why God takes those that are dear to him.
