Personal Experience
Every student attending the University of Maryland, College Park has access to opportunities and benefits that will last them a lifetime. One of these opportunities available to each and every student is participation in the internship program. I believe that working as an intern is a valuable part of an undergraduate education because it can give a student a head start in their career. Entering any profession can be a challenging experience. For many individuals, entering a profession and learning about that field prior to entering it can make the process of entering their field a more positive and fulfilling experience. Participation in the internship program has been one of the most fulfilling and exciting experiences of my life. As a senior fulfilling my last few credits for graduation, I chose to work as an intern for the American Bar Association with the Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law. The Commission is an organization that was created by the American Bar Association as part of a sub-committee to address issues for an underrepresented group, the disabled community. This sub-committee is made up of lawyers who want to get information out and make it available for people who want to know about disa
disability law, and learn case procedures. I have read a total of 394 cases completely. Upon reading the cases I had to determine the party who won, the decision that was made in each case, and in which circuit the case was heard. In completing my survey I have been able to determine that the employers have won 90% of all the discrimination claims against them (please see attached survey). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The disadvantage to working for the Commission has been lack of time to dedicate to my schoolwork. Considering the Commission has deadlines and requirements of their own, I was not given sufficient time to work on an appropriate project for my internship. However, I was able to make a considerable contribution to the organization by completing the employment survey discussed earlier. Participating in the internship program has impacted me by giving me the opportunity to work in a professional atmosphere, gain first hand experience working in the field of my interest, and working on a project that has helped the organization I worked for. I strongly recommend that each and every student attending the University of Maryland, College Park, make time for independent study. It is an experience they will treasure for a lifetime. Other tasks I have been fortunate to perform have been on-line research. This type of research has been very interesting. I was given a large number of cases that listed the attorneys for the defendant and plaintiff for each case. I was then required to search the Martin Dale Hubble directory, which lists attorneys all over the world, for each of the attorneys listed in the cases. As a result of this experience, I am now able to locate any attorney in the world if they are listed in this directory. Working as an intern has taught me many things. Working for a large organization such as the American Bar Association is a little more complex than I expected. I believed that large organizations employed a lot of people in various positions to help the organization run smoothly. To my surprise I found out that not all organizations are so fortunate. Government and private grants fund the commission I worked for, along with most if not all the other commissions that are a part of the ABA. Therefore, the Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law is only able to employ four attorneys. For that reason, they
