Battle of Chancellorsville
The American Civil War does not seem to be a very interesting aspect of history of the United States to some people today. There have been events that have left a more lasting impression on Americans, which is peculiar because the Civil War really created the Nation we experience and live in today. The Civil War and its many battles were all fought entirely on the United States soil and were predominately fought by Americans, yet most Americans think mostly of the World Wars and Vietnam in war discussions. The Civil War laid the foundation for the American way of thinking and governing, and yet the actual war nearly ruined the whole country. The war started out as a quest for freedom, and ended up a war fighting for emancipation. Throughout the Civil War, many battles were fought in many states over this new Nation. The battle I chose to write about was the Battle of Chancellorsville. The Battle of Chancellorsville had many distinguishing aspects, as did many of the other battles during the Civil War. Three main points came from this battle. It is best known as "Lee's Masterpiece" or "Lee's Greatest Victory." That description pretty much gives away the end result of the battle, but I plan on g

What Hooker did not realized was his enemy, General Lee, knew exactly what his plan was and understood it better than Hooker himself. On May 1, 1863, at 11:20 a.m., the Battle of Chancellorsville began. Sykes, one of Hooker's officers, unexpectedly ran into the skirmish line of the Confederates, which ended with an order by Hooker to retreat back to Chancellorsville. This gave Hooker a chance to see what Lee would do. Hooker remained on the defensive thus giving Lee the initiative. Lee responded to Hooker's maneuvers by splitting his army as well. Lee realized Hooker was going to attack him from the flank and rear through a place called "the Wilderness," so he sent men to Fredericksburg to delay any Union troops. Lee then sent the remainder of his troops to Chancellorsville to take care of Hooker and his men. On the night of May 1, he sat down with Stonewall Jackson and his ma! When word got out about Jackson, Jefferson Davis grieved with his countrymen. He told them all "...war has seldom shown his equal." General Lee said simply, "I have lost my right arm." The loss of Stonewall Jackson and a quarter of his men was devastating, but Lee continued his attacks and came out victorious in the end. The victory at Chancellorsville raised the spirits of the South and frustrated the Union's plans for an assault on Richmond. This made it possible for him to gain the confidence and gave him an opportunity to invade the North at Gettysburg. This battle was unlike any other during the war. This was in part due to the maneuvering through what seemed to be landscape impossible to maneuver in Northern Virginia.
