Mark 4 and 13 ("A" paper)
During his time on Earth, Jesus taught thousands of people the messages of God in heaven. The followers of Jesus were taught the Word through Parables. Parables explain deep messages and morals in short, easily understood stories. In the Gospel of Mark, chapters 4 and 13, Jesus addresses a large crowd and his disciples with some of the Bible's most important teachings. In Mark 4:1-9, Jesus has placed himself inside a boat on the sea while a great crowd stood beside the sea on the land. On this boat, Jesus tells the parable of the sower and the seed. Jesus told the crowd that as the man sowed, some of the seed fell upon the path. Some seed was snatched up by birds, and some had no soil and sprang up quickly, only to be scorched by the sun and wither away because it had no roots. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns choked it. Finally, the other seed fell into good soil, and it brought forth grain growing up and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundred fold (Mark 4: 4-8) When Jesus is alone after his teachings, his disciples come to him and question him about the meaning behind the parable. "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; (Mark 4:
Following this, the four disciples that are with Jesus; Peter, John, James, and Andrew, ask him when the end of time will be, and what will be the sign that these things are about to occur (Mark 13: 4). Jesus, speaking to them directly without parables, tells them of certain ones that will come proclaiming to be him, but they will be lying and lead many away from the truth. But when rumors of wars are heard, they must not be alarmed, for nation will rise against nation and earthquakes and famines will signify the beginning of the birth pangs. Brothers will betray brothers, fathers will betray their children, and children will rise up to put their parents to death. All will hate them because of Jesus' name. These horrible things will occur, "But the one who endures to the end will be saved (Mark 13: 13)." That He (Jesus) will "send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the ends of heaven (Mark 13: 27)." Jesus tells the fo! ur that they should be righteous in the eyes of God, because neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son know the time. Only the Father knows when this end will occur. His advice to his disciples and to all who hear the word, "Keep awake (Mark 13: 37)." There are also some very clear differences between Jesus' teachings in the two chapters. The clearest and most important difference between the two chapters however, is Jesus' tone and emphasis in addressing his audience. In Mark 4, Jesus has a very calm demeanor, taking on the role of a close friend telling a story to his friends. However, in Mark 13, Jesus' entire role as a teacher changes. Instead of being friendly, and simply telling a story to an audience, he is very urgent and has a critical point to make to his fellow disciples. ----------------------------------------------
