braveheart
BraveHeart is, one of Hollywood's best films depicting the historical past of Scottish history during the thirteenth century. Actor Mel Gibson, who not only had the leading role of Sir William Wallace, but also produced and directed the film, did a great job in trying to reconstruct history as it once was. However, from having read the book William Wallace: Brave Heart by James Mackay, I found that there were many discrepancies throughout the epic film, which I believe to have lessened its credibility. First, I will briefly discuss the events that took place before the birth of William Wallace and how he came to be Scotland's most memorable hero. However, many of the facts, which I have stated above were either omitted or did not seem important enough for the writer or producer to include into the script. I think that filmmakers do a great job in recapturing historical moments. Unfortunately, they do not put a lot of effort into really showing people what had happened. In BraveHeart, there are numerous misrepresentations of facts. For instance, in the movie we are led to believe that Wallace's mother was already dead, which is not true. Also, they did see fit to mention Wallace's younger brother John, and if you remember in the first half an hour of the film his father and older brother dies when Williams was a boy. This also is not true. Another discrepancy, which I feel the need to discuss, is during the early 1200's before the war had begun, Scotland was in deed a wealthy country not the destitute country with poor men running wild as shown in the movie. Also, writers and producers will admit that the setting of the! William Wallace was born in 1272 in the town of Elerslie, Scotland. He was the second of three sons to Sir Malcolm Wall
