Death of a Salesman

"Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller is about a salesman named Willy who fails to understand how to be successful. He often talks about trying to be more successful in the business world, but he never seems to go through with what he says. "Willy Loman, traveling salesman, is driven to suicide because success American-style is all about nakedly marketing oneself"(Klinghoffer,1). He is a weak character with many flaws. Thus is why I believe that he is just a pathetic character and undeserving of the title tragic character.

Willy Loman is a failing salesman in his sixties, who returns home from a sales trip that he could not finish. He is tired of living on the road constantly, driving from town to town trying to sell his products. He often seems to be thinking about the past, and about how everything that he has ever wanted has crashed down around him. He no longer is getting paid by the hour by his business. He only works on straight commission. "He was never a great salesman and had no contacts anywhere"(Vangie, 1).

Willy has two grown boys, Biff and Happy (Hap). Willy thinks that Biff would be a success as a salesman. "He is primarily concerned about the once magnificent young football star, who at thirty-four drif

Willy then decides that he is going to commit suicide so that Biff can take his insurance money and start his own business. Willy wants Biff to be a success. Willy asks if there is any "seed shops"(1458). There is a metaphorical meaning behind the seeds, because Willy feels the need to leave something behind. Willy then goes home, and in the middle of the night, leaves and crashes his car.

The only people that are present at Willy's funeral are Linda, Hap, Biff, Charley, and Bernard. Willy had false pretenses before, thinking that many people would show up at his funeral. As the play draws to an end, there are countless flashbacks of Biff complaining about his father. Biff then states that "He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong"(1467).

Willy then goes back to living in the present. He is accompanied then by Happy. He starts talking hysterically about his brother Ben. "He often regrets that he turned down his brothers offer to travel to Alaska to make his fortunes"(Laura, 1). Ben then found diamond mines in Africa and became rich. Willy idealizes Ben, and always looked at him as a father figure, because their father was not a part of their lives growing up.

Willy then has a flashback to when Biff and Hap were in high school, when Biff was the captain of the football team. Biff steals a football from the locker room, and when his father finds out about it, his father tells him to "return"(1411) the ball, and then goes on to say that Biff has "to practice with a regulation ball and that the coach will probably congratulate [him] on [his] initiative"(1411). Willy does not seem to teach good morals for his children, because he sends mixed messages about life, success, and doing what is right.

As the plot progresses, it becomes more apparent that there is an intense tension between Biff and his father. Biff shows no respect at all towards his father. Biff goes on to dismiss his father and his wishes. Linda exposes that she knows that Willy h
