"I am the rose of sharon, and the lily of the valleys. As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love."(Solomon 2:1-4)

John Steinbeck refers to passages in the bible throughout the Grapes of Wrath. He shows that everyone has a family no matter what, even if he or she is not blood related. Everyone comes together and creates a circle, a circle of life.

Rose of Sharon had a stillborn but she still has milk from her breasts. They go for shelter and see a boy kneeling next to his papa. The man is starving, but can not hold down solid food; Rose of Sharon knows what she has to do and knows what is right. She leans down and lets the man have the milk. As the man drinks a mysterious smile appears on her face.

Rose of Sharon is considered the completion of the life cycle and helps the survival of another. In giving a part of herself to a stranger, she experienced a spiritu


People give up things to help someone in need; they act as a family, and join together to form a whole.
