Horse Dealer's Daughter
A detailed Summary of Horse Dealer's Daughter
The central theme in D.H Lawrence's Horse Dealer's Daughter is love. This desire and need to love is shared between a few people, but the primary holder is Mabel. Mabel is the horse dealer's daughter. She is a young woman in her mid twenties who is in search of her true being. Her father has died and Mabel along with her brothers are in debt and with nowhere to go. Through all the commotion, one person manages to keep her composure and that person is Mabel. This young lady has so much love to give and seemingly nobody to give it to: nobody except for her dead parents, her mother who passed when she was 14 and her recently deceased father, nobody except for her brothers who do not want to be loved. So what does she do? Exactly what anyone in need of loving and being loved would do, she looks for a way out.
Her brothers do not want the love. They have already packed their bags and are ready to leave the farm. They are ready to leave the place they have called home their whole lives. This is too much. Mabel is not ready. "For months Mabel had been serventless in the big home, keeping the home together in penury for her ineffectual brothers"(375). Mabel has kept the farm

ng, and, drawing her nearer, turned to take his way to land again"(378). He does not know how to swim and yet risks his life to save a girl he barely knows. That is love.
It seems as though all the loving that Mabel has done in the past is going to be returned to her, but is it too late? Has this child in need of affection gone astray? "She lifted her eyes, feeling him looking. Their eyes met. And each looked away again at once, each feeling in some way found out by the other"(377) Was it too late? Could Mabel still be loved, or has the doctor waited too long? He had been a family friend for a very long time. Was it too much to ask from him to exchange greetings with this nice young lady. Maybe it is too much to ask. Why should anybody do anything nice for her? It is not as if she has spent her whole life being nice to people. Patience though, her favors are about to be returned. "It was portentous, her face. It seemed to mesmerize him. There was a heavy power in her eyes which laid hold of his whole being, as if he had drunk some powerful drug. He had been feeling week and done before. Now the life came back into him, he felt !
"He felt if he looked away from her, in the thick, ugly falling dusk, he would lose her all together. He followed her minutely as she moved, direct and intent, like something transmitted rather than stirring in voluntary activity, straight down the field towards the pond. There she stood on the bank for a moment. She never raised her head. Then she waded slowly into the water"(377). What was she doing going into the wate
