In the short story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, I read about the character of Jig. I began to focus on her as a character for my analysis because I was impressed by how she expressed all her feelings without directly telling you what was happening. Jig revealed that her life had come to a fork in the road, she is confused and eager to make the right decision. She is torn between her lover and the possibility of having to end the life of the child being created inside her. Yet, through all this frustration in her life only her gestures and creative ways of describing colorful situations informs the reader of what is actually going on.

The fate of this unborn child lies in Jig's hands. She wants to make things work, but is frustrated by her lover's unwillingness to even think of that possibility. As she thinks about those possibilities the beautiful scenery on one side of the train tracks amazes her. With her vast imagination she sees more than just trees, mountains, and a river. In fact she compares nature to her pregnancy, and relates the growing of life to the wonders of nature. I think that she is trying to be optimistic about the future. This is important since she is scared that things are going to take a turn for the worst once she does have the abortion.
