Managing People

A detailed Summary of Managing People

The business world of today is changing at the speed of light. This far-fetched statement is one that is actually true as information travels around the world in minutes. Today's modern manager must have the skills to keep up with the information, people, and equipment of today.

The modern manager needs many skills in today's workplace, but the most prevalent skill needed has not changed. This is people skills. The most common problems manager will face on a day to day basis is those involving people. Managers must learn to deal with workers who bring problems into work, employees who can't work together, and a fast trend towards companies without loyaty and employees without loyalty to companies. Managers must be able to keep all of these major issues involving people and still maintain the wanted objected through the companies finaces. Managers must be able to control, lead, and organize their people on a day-to-day basis. There are many ways that they can do this, but they must start off with a good team. If a a manager doesn't have good employees to work with, then it is much harder for a company to succeed. Managers need a strong team, because a mediocre team gives mediocre results, no matter how well managed it is

Chamber of Commerce, my manager was one who tried her hardest to make sure she had the strongest team, yet one employee did not pull his share of the work nor did he have the required skills to work with the rest of us. Managers make the mistake of holding onto somebody who doesn't quite measure up. It's easy to keep this person on the job because he's not terrible at what he does. But a good manager will replace him or move him to a set of responsibilities where he can succeed unambiguously. It took a long time before my manager was able to finally ready to fire this employee. The major problem with allowing such workers to be on the team is that they make everyone else frustrated beacuase we must pick up the slack of that worker.

The final step in making sure that people at companies are worth the effort is to make sure that they obtain their goals. This is done by having realistic goals not farf-feteched ones because this makes the goals always a dream and never a reality. Once people in an organization have something to strive for, they will strive for it with the right envrioment and support of the whole company. One great example of this was seen the Chamber of Commerce. Almost all employees had personal goals they were to meet in their job, yet it went higher than that. Most of the goals were to be met at a department level and some were even cross-departmental. This led to great cohensiveness between the workers. Also, all bonsuses at the chamber were based off this system. Each month, we would see how those goals were doing, congradulate those who were ahead of schedule, and those who weren't had to explain why. After that, we tried to make sure that those goals that were behind schedul!
