Grapes of Wrath Book Report

The beginning of the story had started in Oklahoma during the month of May. The rain was said to bring growth to the corn. However the seasons were changing and that drought began and by the beginning of June the vegetation of the world began to fade and become dust.

The Joad family decides to leave for California and start a new life there where they hear it has a lot of work for migrants.

The journey to California, the marrying of Rose, the leaving of Noah by the Colorado River, Grandma's death, all which consisted during the travel to California. The Joad's go through various campsites where they search for jobs.

Casy was murdered. Tom wanted to avenge his death and in this process he matured and accepted the teachings of Casy. Tom knew in order to fight poverty (which was the antagonist) he would have to have to fight and try to mobilize the people.

The Joad's and all migrant workers are threatened with their lives because of poverty. There is a continuation of bad mishaps that had taken place, Rose's still born that had been sent down the stream, no money and food during winter, and the continual reduction


Ivy and Sarah (Sairy) Wilson - were a couple that the Joad's had met, they were from Kansas and helped the Joad's bury their Grampa when he had died. The Joad's helped the Wilson's with their car and offered to travel together.

Ma Joad - is the mother of children and a wife. She is a strong woman.

Willie Eaton - in charge of the entertainment committee who had directed action against rioters.

Rose of Sharon - is the Joad's only daughter. She gets married to Connie Rivers. She hopes to live in the same town as her family when they arrive in California. When Tom came back from prison he finds his sister pregnant. Rose has a stillborn baby.

The gas station owner - Was mea to the Joad's for not buying anything, but when they did he was a lot kinder.

Tom Joad - was the protagonist. Tom was the second son and he had stayed for four years in prison for killing a man when he was drunk. Tom goes through a development in the novel. So Tom becomes a dynamic character.

No compassion of men. When there are bad times, men are treated badly as well. And there is no compassion for the fellow man and this is expressed throughout the novel.

Irony: George kills his friend because he did not want Lennie to die with Curley's satisfaction. George tells his dear friend to dream of the ranch, which they dreamed together when he was shot.

Muley Graves - was a nice man who lived by the Joads. Muley wants to stay at home when the Joads left for California.
