Actors in the Criminal Justice system face ethical dilemmas more often than the average person due to their interaction with the public and because of authority given to them by that same public. The police, arguably, might be subject to more ethical dilemmas than any other branch of the Criminal Justice system. The plight of the police making these ethical decisions on an everyday basis was depicted very well in the television series NYPD Blue.
There were several issues that I observed in the particular episode that we viewed. Some of these issues were related to some of the ethical philosophies that we discussed in class. One of the ethical issues that were in the show was how the police had the ability to exercise their discretion in almost any way that they wanted. Even though it was fictional it still gave a good picture of some of the ethical dilemmas that law enforcement agencies and other Criminal Justice agencies might encounter. The fact that people active in the Criminal Justice system are faced with such situations on a day to day basis is why it is important that actors in the Criminal Justice system make their decisions ethically.
