media analysis
We live in a world where women slightly outnumber men. Women no longer are solely housewives. They hold prominent positions in business, yet television and film still portray them as young, dumb, and beautiful, these being there only qualities. Most people would think that since we live in a time where most households bring home two incomes from both husband and wife, that the media would portray these realistic views. Instead they continue to feed us false illusions of what women once were but are no longer. The average American spends more than half their awakened hours a week in front of a television set. Since we are so close to our TV screens we often trust them too much. People forget that TV is simply, TV. They trust that what they are shown in the media is truthful or at least somewhat accurate. The problem is that most women today work nine to five jobs and take on just as many activities and chores as men do. Yet, they are still shown on television and in film as submissive wives who only take care of the home and children. If they are shown in any other positions it is usually as an over sexed business woman who will sleep with any man that can advance her career. She is not seen as having enough intellig
that men are superior because if man can use a cleaning product it must not take much effort considering that "no men clean house, that's a woman's job". the question is, Why are there more men with successful leading roles rather than women? Television does not reflect observable realities although it may well reflect the current distribution of power, and the values of those who hold it. There was a point in time when women were strictly stay at home mothers. They cooked, cleaned and took care of the family. Maybe that is because men still hope that one day women will leave the work force and return to do their laundry. In past years there has been a rise in divorce which means that there are more single family homes than before. This means that in most cases women are working just as hard as there male counterparts. Women have fought long and hard for their equality and it is sad that in a time when women have all of the same rights as men that they are still repressed by today's media. "Though there is little doubt that TV presents largely traditional gender images there is mixed evidence about the impact of such images on gender attitudes and behavior". The corporations have taken over and formed major networks. There only concerns are with what will bring i! n ratings so that they can make the most amount of money possible. Unfortunately sex sells, as well as, young beautiful women. Men do not want to see old, heavy-set women across there TV screens. They defiantly do not want to admit that a woman who may not possess a beautiful appearance on the outside could be more beautiful than any supermodel on the inside. Television directors, predominately male, have argued that women were less likely to be taken seriously by viewers. However, one could argue that physical attractiveness plays more of a part in role selection. More and more, in today's television world, young beautiful women are the only successful females.
