A detailed Summary of The Great Gatsby


F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby highlights the relationship between characters Daisy Buchannan and Jay Gatsby. Throughout the novel in selected memories and flash backs, the readers are informed of an intimate bond that Gatsby and Daisy shared so many years before the time that the story line had begun. Using descriptive scenery,

analogies and imagery, Fitzgerald creates the beginning of a chaotic saga that lingers between the two characters. Their relationship plays an important role in the development of the other characters, as well as the climax of the novel.

Gatsby first meets Daisy as a young man in the war in Louisville, Kentucky. The two know eachother for a brief amount of time, perhaps merely a month, but decide that whenGatsby comes back from the war that they would marry. This is a turning point for the storyline, because it becomes obvious that perhaps Gatsbys love for Daisy wasnt necessarily because of Daisys character, but more for the image she stood for in his mind.

Gatsby also thinks about Daisy during the war. The truth can shift and change over years, and during the times when Gatsby was alone he became more in love with Daisy. Daisy also became a symbol of back home, and he had something to miss and to look forward to when the war was over. He became mentally attached to her without even knowing her.
