Delpit's Community is a classroom in Philadelphia where she teaches English to both black and white students. She explains that these students come from very different worlds. They have dissimilar cultures, they are raised diversely, and they use disparate derivatives of "the King's" English. Delpit must work more intensely with those students in her class who do not practice Standard English in everyday conversation. But at the same time she must not slow the entire class down so that the students who are well versed in Standard English lose interest and fall behind in their education. I feel that if the students become intermingled in the contact zone and converse with each other, the lacking students will pick up Standard English from listening to the students who use Standard English in regular conversation. This can only occur if everyone's dignity is preserved in the process. Students made to feel inept would likely rebel from learning.

George and I worked with our learner Elizabeth Carson, an elderly lady who was once literate, but had a stroke and lost her ability to read and write. Elizabeth needed the skills and tools to read re-taught to her all over again. We started out by re-teaching Elizabeth the alphabet. She caught on fast and did not have much trouble reciting it back to us. Next we needed to teach her the sounds each letter makes so she would be able to pronounce and sound out words. This was more difficult for her than learning the letters. It took George and I two classes until we thought Elizabeth was ready to begin reading small and simple words.
