In "An End to Audience?" Margaret Atwood states that television has become too important in our society. She believes that television has become the storyteller to millions of children around the world, as compared to many yeas ago when stories were told by human beings. I strongly agree with her, but I would like to take it a step further. I think today's society is more interested in what happens on ER rather than what their family history is. A person can be interested in a television show, but it has taken over people's lives. Technological advances like e-mail, the Internet, and pagers have taken over many aspects of life that were once tradition and made them obsolete. When I was young, I used to spend my entire summer vacation in Vermont. My dad moved there when I was about eight, and for years that was where my summers were spent. We did all kinds of outdoor activities. We hiked, went swimming, mountain biked, and even did a little rock climbing. We had a lot of fun as a family and never watched television. Storytelling, like letter writing and talking on the phone, has become lost in the shuffle of technology. The old ways of communicating have gone by the wayside. The mainstream today is e-mail, instant messenger, and Internet, leaving real human interaction only a byproduct of mechanical error. In my opinion, people need to give technology a rest and start learning to communicate with a real person. While talking through the computer is still a form of communication, it lacks human contact, and that can hurt young children in developing ways to handle real situations.
