A Hidden Treasure

A detailed Summary of A Hidden Treasure

Nestled in the wee town of River Falls, population around 10,000, lies a treasured place no one knows exists. To it's regulars, it's a haven. What would they do if they couldn't get their 6 a.m. pot of coffee or a conversation with a friend they most likely said the exact same words to yesterday morning? This hidden paradise, named South Fork Cafe, or to others, The Fork.

When you enter the Fork, you see what might be perceived as a cheap attempt at a fancy restaurant. The carpet screams to be replaced. It's blue hues and purple diamonds ache with each step of a person's foot. Moving past the door and looking to the right, there are two window tables that face Main Street. One of the tables, if you happen to be in at 10 a.m., is occupied by Johnny, otherwise known as "Johnny in the window". The name was given to him by the waitresses for his loyalty to the window table. His mullet hairstyle and sleeveless shirts, arms covered with tattoos of "Debbie", "Donna", and "Marie" done by himself, are a tough cover up for the little teddy bear inside. But, you wouldn't want to steal his seat. Continuing leftward, a chain of eight booths line the left wall. Recently upholstered, the new pink color genuinely

To the right is the counter aligned with bar stools. These stools are reserved for two people, only they aren't actually reserved. Everyone just has his or her own seat. Francis, a local man who attends the Fork three times a day at approximately 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., humors the waitresses with his extremely dry jokes and daily weather forecasts. To Kristin Feidler, a waitress, he is someone a person could count on for company, the news, or for safety. She believes that all the girls feel that way. He knows everything, she says, about each long time resident of River Falls as well as it's businesses. His most recognizable quote is, "It's better for a man to be an *censored* than to be an intimidating bastard who harasses young women." That intimidating man is other wise known as Steve the stalker, the occupant of the second of the six bar stools at the counter. The girls say he's a supposed rapist who likes to stare at young coll!

ege girls, staying at the Fork for up to five hours at a time, drinking coffee and being utterly disgusting. When Steve enters the doors and saunters his out of shape body and almost philosophical mind over to the counter, all waitresses run to the kitchen leaving the rotten egg to wait on his own until one of them gets voted to be his server. When the intimidator is present, the air is bitter and cold. Waitresses' moods turn ugly and many four letter words are exchanged quietly.

These men demand prompt service and barely tip the girls a buck. They feel that they're doing the Fork a service for spending their mo
