The movie starts off with a busload of seven elderly women traveling through the Canadian wilderness. The bus breaks down and the women are stranded in a deserted farmhouse, twenty miles away from the nearest town. Essentially, Strangers in Good Company is just what its title says. The movie chronicles how the seven women cope with their misfortune and how they bond as friends.

We don't just get strong characters here. We also get characters seen all too rarely on the screen. When's the last time you saw a film that focused on seven older women? This portrayal is laudable for breaking down the stereotypes of elderly women, and it does this without losing credibility. For example, the women are fearful but not helpless. One character tries to repair the bus. These women are hopeful, but they know their physical limitations and the effects of advancing age. Each of them has moments of frustration, but they are never portrayed as stodgy. Each character has depth. They are human, and Scott is able to highlight that aspect while still producing an entertaining film.

In the movie, the moment of truth comes when Orlando is sent to war in central Asia and chooses not to kill or be killed. Suddenly Orlando is looking in the mirror at her newly female form: "Same person, no difference at all. Just a different sex."

Strangers in Good Company will never have universal appeal. Viewers are too accustomed to fast-moving movie hype to slow down and appreciate something different. As a result, some people will consider this film to be boring due to its lack of gloss and its leisurely-paced plot. Others will find beauty in the plainness. Strangers in Good Company is a story of friendship and courage. It is also a story of women and their special bond with one another. It is subtle and understated, and it is a true gem.

Orlando is a rather cool film, populated by characters who are so thinly developed that they're little more than walking ideas. It may be difficult to warm to, particularly if you don't know Woolf's writings or you're not familiar with the origins of the book, which is dedicated to Woolf's friend, Vita Sackville-West, who inspired it. Vita's son and biographer, Nigel Nicholson, called it "the longest and most charming love letter in literature."

Jerry (Jack Lemmon) and Joe (Tony Curtis) are struggling musicians. Their gig at a well paying speak-easy was working out rather nice until the fuzz busted in. They managed to escape into the night with their instruments, but their pockets were unsettlingly empty. After selling their coats for money, they were cold and desperate, without work in the middle of a Chicago winter.

As the ship sails on to Rio, Charlotte finds out more about Jerry's life as a married man, and gets more involved with him. As their relationship gets as close as it's ever going to get in this movie, Jerry puts two cigarettes in his mouth, lights them simultaneously, and then hands one to Charlotte. You have to see this to believe it. The smoldering looks she gives while their smoke mingles in the air between them.... well, it's priceless. After this,
