A detailed Summary of First Practice


At first glance Gary Gildner's pome "First Practice" seems very short, simple, and straight to the point. With the pome's boot camp like feel, it leads you to believe it is all about preparing fearless young men for war. There are certain points in the pome where the author uses militaristic traits and wording which again leads you to believe the pome in some way must be related to the military. Although the tone of this pome sounds like a Drill Sargent, it is really about a youths first football practice.

The pome starts with the line "After the doctor checked to see we weren't ruptured" which seems normal for a pome titled "First Practice". This is the young kid telling you about how he had to get a physical from a doctor in order to play. In the second line the pome throughs a twist at you "the man with the short cigar took us under the grade school.". Just that one word "CIGAR" completely burns the word Drill Sargent into your mind. Now with an army like feel in your head the next line backs it up more with "where we went in case of attack or


ne is telling the kids to cover up any cuts and bruises when they have there uniforms on so the game dose not look so violent. This line could have also meant as a soldier you have to keep your uniform perfect and do not show any defect or weakness to the enemy. The last line of the pome leaves you with a uncertain ending " he said, he said, Now." It seems as thought the young boy is already programed to listen and do what the coach says by repeating him. This agin relates to the military training, you do what you are told no questions asked.
