concrete applications and testing

Concrete today is probably the most widely used construction material in the world. This is due not only to the wide range of applications that concrete offers, but also its great strength, affordability, durability, and versatility. Concrete can be cast in place into basically any desired form, which often makes it an architect's first choice, or it can be used in form of precast shapes, mostly panels, and thus not only speed up the construction process, but also ensure high quality, since precast concrete is cast and cured under most favorable conditions.

Even though most of it will be hidden by face brick, concrete was still the material of choice for the structure of Howe Hall. The core of the building consists of reinforced concrete cast in place with EFCO formwork, and on the outside precast panels are installed to reduce the overall cost. Most of the concrete here is Type I (normal) concrete, which is the most widely used concrete in the industry, because it suits many applications. Bid package #3 (concrete) was obtained by Woodruff Construction of Fort Dodge, and their bid totaled over $3,000,000. This bid includes the overall sum Woodruff will obtain for its

Before the placing of concrete, it will be checked for quality at the job-site. At Howe Hall, these tests are performed by Maxim Technologies Inc. out of Des Moines, IA. A representative of this company will be present at the project site to perform visual inspections on reinforcement steel prior to concrete placement. During the placement of the concrete, samples of each load will be taken. These samples are used to perform required field tests as well as to prepare and test concrete compressive strength specimens. The report for this test will include the contractor and concrete supplier, specification requirements, method of test, date and time of sampling, temperature of air and concrete, air content, location of placement, and the responsible technician. In addition, a summary of the test results will be given, which include the cylinder number, slump measured, date tested, age of concrete, cylinder parameters, and compressive strength in psi.

If the concrete contractor, in this case Woodruff, wishes to deviate from the concrete specifications in the project manual, they will submit their suggestion to the project manager, who in turn will submit it to Maxim Technologies, Inc. to verify that the new mix design will still meet expectations. As an example, Woodruff wanted to reduce the air
