William Carey
William Carey was born on August 17, 1761 in the village of Northamptonshire in the midland region of England. Carey's interest in education would form a major part of his life's work, as the eldest son of a village school master and weaver, Edmund Carey. At the age of seven, Carey developed severe allergies and a skin disease, which was greatly irritated by long exposures of the sun. Therefore, his parents found work for him indoors as a shoemaker. Later on William Carey worked as an apprentice to a shoemaker at Piddington named John Warr. John Warr was the man who led Carey to his faith in Jesus Christ in 1775. With the Revolution of 1688 and the Act of Toleration the following year, Dissenters were granted statutory freedom of worship. In 1719, Parliament passed a bill a bill forbidding anyone who attended a Dissenting meeting from teaching. Penalty for its violation was three months in jail. On October 5, 1783, William Carey was baptized in the Nene River by! John Ryland, Jr. and three deacons from the College Lane Church. On Sunday, June 10, 1781, William Carey and Dorothy Plackett were united in marriage at the church in Piddington. There was a series of severe death, diseases, and sickne
William Carey was a very bold man and speaker. I agree and like many of the things that he said and did in his lifetime. For example, when he felt God's calling to go somewhere, Carey was willing to go. I admire his willingness to go wherever God called him. This reminds me of Abraham in Genesis 12:1, "The Lord had said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your people, and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.'" In the book, William Carey talks about God truly blessing those that give to missions. This reminds me of tithing. When we give 10% of our wages over to God and his work in the church, then he will in turn bless us. When we give 10% even if we do not have it, then God will provide the money that we need because we are faithful to him. The book about the life and mission of William Carey is very informative to the reader. William Carey was a man who prayed for the conversion and salvation of the world. Carey believed that it pleased God to save those that believed. I really like the passion that William Carey had for those people to accept Jesus Christ into their hearts. His desire was to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the whole world. If there were more people who had this same desire and passion as Carey had, then we more people would be won to Jesus Christ everyday. The world would be a better place if we would have the same passion of being "on fire" for God for our generation as William Carey had for his generation. Carey wanted to show the need for missions and that it is the church that must go out and make disciples of all nations. I like how he uses a persuasive way of speaking to get his audience's attention. By 1834, there were 14 societies in England as well as many others in Europe and America. On February 7, 1801, the first edition of the New Testament was translated in Bengali. By 1837, Carey and his associates had translated the Bible into some 40 languages and dialects. Also, by 1817, the Baptist missionaries had opened 130 schools with an average attendance of 6,703 students. William Carey was a professor at Fort William College in Calcutta (or a tutor as he was first called due to his position as a Dissenter). The biography on William Carey was very moving. He is a very important person for me to know about because I have chosen to graduate from the college named after him. By reading this book, I believe that anyone would be inspired to give themselves more to God and His work, if not in the mission filed then just in their daily lives. William Carey put his whole entire life into God's hands and in return, the Lord surely provided for him and his family. This is a perfect example of being faithful to God and Him being faithful to His children. If there were to be an appropriate theme to this entire novel, it would be: "Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God." This is the main quote of William Carey and it is also the theme and motto of this schoo
