Autism is one of the mental, emotional, and behavior disorders that appears in early childhood, usually within the first 3 years of a child's life. Autism affects many aspects of a child's development- such as: difficultly in communicating with others; repetitious behaviors (like rocking back and forth, head banging, or touching or twirling objects); a limited range of interests and activities; and having very little tolerance for change in their environment or daily routine. Scientists have also identified chemicals in the brain and the immune system that may be responsible for autism. Children with autism have been found with higher levels of serotonin (a chemical found in the brain). In addition, there has been several theories- which all have been proven to be false- it's a mental illness; autistic children are just rebellious; it is due to bad parenting.
