achieve his goal, and how it eventually leads to his demise. Gatsby was a

man who desired to be accepted by the upper class and prestigious in society,

and he had to overcome many obstacles throughout his life to reach his goals.

Gatsby had the dream since he was a young man. A dream to rise above his ascribed status and achieve one of an elite member of society. As Gatsby's dad tells Nick Carraway, "Jimmy (Jay) was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he's got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me that I et like a hog once and I beat him for it." When Gatsby was a young man he met Dan Cody, a yachter, who showed Gatsby how to be a gentlemen. The interesting thing was that Cody was a crook, but he gave people the impression that he was a gentleman. So he showed Gatsby ways to deceive people into believing that he was a gentleman when in actuality he was just another liar. Gatsby later met the love of his life, Daisy; which helped in his decision to strive to be a member of

the wealthy class. Daisy was born into wealth. She was beautiful and popular. Gatsby met her when he was a soldier stationed in her town!

When Gatsby returned from the military service, he started to make his fortune. He believed that Daisy or her family would never accept him if she knew that he was poor. But his obsession with Daisy created this desire to become rich. He did this by becoming a gambler and a bootlegger. He became good friends with a man named Meyer Wolfsheim, who fixed the World Series in 1919. Gatsby became wealthy and bought a huge house on Long Island. His house was right across the Bay from Daisy and Tom Buchanon's house. Daisy's friend Jordan Baker said, "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay." In order to be accepted by the wealthy, and hoping that Daisy would come, he threw large parties, and always have many guests over. This made him very popular, and he met many people.
