The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is an epic novel about the desires, dreams, and Desperations of one man. It shows the struggle that a man goes through to achieve his goal, and how it eventually leads to his demise. Gatsby was a man who desired to be accepted by the upper class and prestigious in society, and he had to overcome many obstacles throughout his life to reach his goals. Gatsby had the dream since he was a young man. A dream to rise above his ascribed status and achieve one of an elite member of society. As Gatsby’s dad tells Nick Carraway, “Jimmy (Jay) was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me that I et like a hog once and I beat him for it.” When Gatsby was a young man he met Dan Cody, a yachter, who showed Gatsby how to be a gentlemen. The interesting thing was that Cody was a crook, but he gave people the impression that he was a gentleman. So he showed Gatsby ways to deceive people into believing that he was a gentleman when in actuality he was just another liar.
