Willard C. Smith was born on September 25 1968 in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the second child of Caroline and Willard C. Smith senior, joining his older sister Pamela and later followed twin siblings Ellen and Harry. He grew up in a strict, middle class household. Will started rapping at the age of 12, when hip hop was still only a marginal part of mainstream culture, teaming up with close pal Jeff Townes to become half of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Adler says that the parental behavior of the mother influences the development of social feeling, the cooperative attitude that distinguishes healthy from unhealthy styles of life. The father, traditionally the authority in the family, teaches the child about power and its selfish or socially responsible expression. Will resent the discipline imposed while he was growing up, but later he applied it to his own children. Will's father had a strictly-controlled upbringing and tried to teach his kids clear lessons about how the world worked, about earning rewards, and how they had to try harder simply because they were from a black family. Will's grandmother was encouraging of his childish antics and entering him into church plays. Although his family was strict and taught lessons of life, he used these lessons and applied many of them to his own, like raising his children and trying his very best at whatever he does. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1.
