Sexually Transmitted Diseases
As humans, we all have sexual needs that need to be fulfilled. Whether or not in a relationship, a person should be very careful about choosing a sex partner. Sex is something that should be treated very seriously. Sexually transmitted diseases are some of the most infectious diseases in the United States. Commonly called STDs, these diseases infect many people each year. With case studies and statistics I plan to explain the dangers involved with such diseases. I also intend to explain the seriousness of sexually transmitted diseases and the possible treatments for them. Many STDs can be cured if they are treated early, but they can also cause problems with reproduction, health, or lead to severe and/or permanent damage. These problems may include, blindness, cancers, heart disease, and death (Brandt 21). STDs are growing rapidly in the U.S. and many people are not aware of their existence. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes herpes infections. More than 40 million Americans are infected with genital herpes and as many as 500,000 new cases are reported each year. Women who acquire herpes during pregnancy can transmit the virus
Approximately one to one-and-a-half million cases of gonorrhea occur each year in the country. The most common symptoms of gonorrhea are a discharge from the vagina of penis and painful or difficult urination. Syphilis has increased dramatically in recent years, with more than 130,000 cases reported in 1990. If untreated, syphilis may go on to more advanced stages, including a transient rash and, eventually, serious involvement of the heart and central nervous system (Corsaro 83). Other diseases that may be sexually transmitted include trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, cytomegalovirus infections, hepatitis B, scabies, and pubic lice. Herpes is not the only disease that is spreading quickly. New chlamydial infections affect four million people annually, and 45,000 Americans are diagnosed with AIDS every year (Ross 16). 1. If you have a sore throat, bits of your hair begin to fall out, and you have pain in your lower belly or sex organs. (Chiappa 46). Treatment for syphilis or gonorrhea usually involves only two shots of an antibiotic in your butt muscles at one visit, half in each side, a number of pills or capsules, or some liquid that you swallow. More often, the disease is treated with a couple of shots of penicillin in a single visit to the doctor (Ross 34). When matters this seriously are not consulted with the proper authorities, situations can become out of control. It is common that young adults hesitate to consult a doctor when in danger of having an STD. This is usually due to not being educated, scared, or embarrassment. What young people fail to realize is that very severe illness and death could be a result of this situation (Chase 113). 3. If you have an ooze, drip or discharge from your sex organs or your eyes (Chiappa 47). Obviously, different diseases require different prescribed drugs. Through previous research it has been found that recommendations for treatment of some "venereal" diseases change from time to time, as a result of continuing clinical studies (Chase 65). Treatments for STDs are available for both curable and non-curable diseases. Some forms of the medicine come in creams, while others come in pills. Most venereal diseases can be cured without any after effects, if treatment is not delayed too long (Chiappa 63). think twice before engaging in an act that could be deadly. Couples should always use protection and remember a famous phrase, "a moment of pleasure can cause a lifetime of pai
