Racism has existed in many facets of life, such as, how the media portrayes African Americans negatively, whether it’s on television or through newspapers and magazines. The aspects presented by Zora Neal Hurston in her novel I Love Myself When I Am Laughing and Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive are still applicable today. This essay will review Zora’s discussions on racism associated with the print media, Jim Crow Laws, and corporate America. This essay will also analyze the reviews according to how racism is being handled today more positively or negatively. Ms. Hurston describes racism in her article “What White Publishers Won’t Print” as white people feeling they have more brains than African Americans, and they do not provide African Americans the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities (Hurston 169).
